A graduate from Kherson State Maritime Academy (KSMA), Captain Semen Radionov joined Marlow Navigation’s training programme as a Cadet in early 2013. He quickly advanced through the ranks to become one of the Company’s youngest ever Captain at 28 in November 2023. We spoke to him recently to learn more about his early ambitions in a career at sea, the road to success, and to get his take for other aspiring maritime professionals.
What inspired/motivated you to pursue a career at sea?
Since a very young age, I felt a close connection to the sea and have always thought of life at sea to be mesmerising and exciting. I directed my energy towards studying and training to develop the knowledge and skills to work in the profession and excel.
What do you enjoy most about a career at sea?
A career at sea brings so much interaction and encounters that drive me personally. This includes working on many different challenges and working with people from many different cultures. Both of these also then help me to acquire new knowledge and skills. Of course, it is also a rewarding long-term and stable career.
In a few words, please describe your first days at sea as a trainee; how you felt, how you overcame any difficulties and moved on?
My first days at sea as a trainee were very interesting and exciting, because everything was so new. But I never felt any fear. I believe the education and training I had prior to this, together with ongoing support from colleagues at sea and ashore helped prepare me well and give me the confidence to take on the challenge.
At this time, I was studying on the bridge alongside a 2nd Officer and working on deck. All my shipmates were very understanding and supportive. I was looking up to them for guidance and motivation, but also understood that I must be committed myself, with passion and determination, as well as of course work hard to improve and advance my career.
How do you approach or face challenges in your work on board?
Collaboration and teamwork are absolutely vital in our line of work, and when dealing with any issues, small and big. We are never alone at sea. There is always support, both from present and former crewmates, as well as from superintendents and other teams ashore.
Also, it is our experience, skills and knowledge that help us to confront and overcome challenges – we should always be learning. This includes many soft skills, such as communication and interpersonal skills, problem solving and especially for officers, leadership and decision-making. Therefore, working on developing such skills on an ongoing basis I believe better prepares one to deal with problems in the future.
As one of the youngest ever Captain from Marlow’s training programme, what tip/s can you share that would help other young aspiring seafarers in their career?
At the beginning of your career, you must set yourself goals and work towards them. And know that you can make them happen. Even every little defeat is a way to victory, as this is how we learn and grow. Never lose sight, always stay dedicated, and continue to follow your aspirations and dreams. At the same time, never be too proud to seek support, and likewise, always be there for others. It is through such cooperation that creates character and credibility, and overall achieves successes.
You have been part of the one company for many years. How do you believe this has helped you in your career advancement?
Yes! To be a part of one company long-term and permanently is a very important aspect. You get to know the team a lot more personally, which certainly helps practically in day-to-day operations, whilst building even stronger loyalty, authority and trust. In our profession at sea, such values are significant, especially for Masters and Officers who are considered as the owners’ representatives out there.
I am extremely happy to be a part of Marlow and K&K Schiffahrts GmbH & Co. KG and do not have enough words to express my gratitude for their appreciation and support over the years.
Success can depend on many factors. What motivational advice can you share that also helped you in your significant achievements.
I’m the kind of person who never gives up, even during difficulties or when under pressure. Having drive, motivation and faith in yourself and abilities gives you confidence and strength. Therefore, set goals and work towards them, and always be open and fully committed to learning and development. Overall, know that you can do a lot and achieve success when you stick to it.
