Marlow Training activities worldwide advanced strongly over the past year, recording significant growth across the board.
The increase in demand for training is a direct result of both internal developments and the external growth of crew management activities, as well as greater interest in Marlow’s training solutions as an independent product. Much of this has also been motivated by new requirements for enhanced competencies in areas such as environmental training and technological advancements, but also other areas.
“We were well-prepared to absorb this additional demand in seafarer training. This comes from extensive research and planning ahead, together with ongoing investment in modernising infrastructure, including equipment and facilities, as well as course development,” states Training Director, Marlow Navigation, Joern Clodius. “Implementation of our new Learning Management System (LMS) in particular has successfully enabled online learning and training needs across the Marlow network and continues to expand as an invaluable tool,” continues Clodius.
The rapid advancement of the energy transition and technology on the whole is revolutionising maritime operations. To ensure sustainability and all-round success, seafarer education and training must also remain at the centre of focus, and keep up pace.
“We are fully committed to this progress by excelling in education and training delivery, with innovation, excellence and maintaining close industry partnerships. Together, diversifying in all aspects for a modern Maritime Training Ecosystem,” adds Clodius.
Updates on latest news and events in training at Marlow are presented in the annual Training Journal, together with equipment and facility upgrades, training projects, and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
With the feature reports this year, the Marlow Opinion piece looks at the importance of automation awareness as a factor in preventing accidents with modern, highly automated ships. In the Analysis, leading transition advisory and project management firm Green Marine covers dual fuel technologies and how education and training is crucial for decarbonisation. Meanwhile in Training Opportunities, we provide an overview of the expansion into cruise shipping, with both existing and upgraded facilities at our partner United Marine Training Center (UMTC) to support new courses in this sector.
Finally, in the Interview, we touch base with Officer-in-Charge, Engine Department at UMTC in Manila, who gives us an upfront and honest insight into the challenges and successes of her career progression in maritime, first as a marine engineer, then instructor, and now as department head and a role model for women in the maritime training industry.
