Safety – Man Overboard training for colleagues at Marlow Netherlands

In cooperation with Delta Safety Training, Marlow Navigation Netherlands organised a tailored Safety / Man Overboard training for colleagues from the Agency and Crewing departments recently – teams whose roles regularly bring them on board vessels and into close proximity with operational maritime environments.

The programme combined both theoretical instruction and practical exercises, offering participants a well-rounded understanding of the risks associated with vessel boarding, transfer operations, and working on or near water. Particular emphasis was placed on situational awareness, safe transfer techniques, survival in the water, and the correct use of life-saving appliances.

Participants also gained hands-on experience in rescue techniques, preparing them for real-world challenges and reinforcing their ability to respond effectively in emergency scenarios.

Man Overboard training is a critical component of maritime safety. Incidents involving personnel falling into the water remain one of the most serious risks at sea, often compounded by factors such as cold shock, strong currents, limited visibility, and delayed response times. Ongoing training ensures individuals not only understand prevention measures, such as proper use of personal protective equipment and safe boarding practices, but are also well prepared to act quickly and confidently should an incident occur. Knowing how to remain afloat, conserve energy, signal for help, and assist in a coordinated rescue can make a life-saving difference.

Importantly, this training also helps to build a strong safety culture across the organisation. By equipping shore-based staff with the same awareness and practical skills expected of marine professionals, the company reinforces its commitment to safety at every level of operation. This shared understanding enhances communication, risk assessment, and decision-making when interacting with vessels and crews.

The sessions were conducted alongside colleagues from Clearwater Shipmanagement, further strengthening collaboration and knowledge-sharing between our teams. Additional training sessions are already planned to ensure that all personnel exposed to similar risks have the opportunity to participate.

Based in Rotterdam, Delta Safety Training is a leading provider of safety and survival training, supporting a wide range of sectors including maritime, Oil & Gas, industrial, transport, and offshore wind. Their state-of-the-art facility spans over 7,000 square metres and features the largest Maritime Survival Pool in Continental Europe, providing a highly realistic environment for immersive, practical training.
