The Training Journal serves as an important platform for sharing developments, initiatives, and insights in maritime education and training across the Marlow global network, together with feature reports covering some of the most relevant topics shaping maritime training today.
The maritime industry continues to undergo a period of profound transformation. Rapid technological advancement, increasing ship automations, digitalisation, decarbonisation initiatives, alternative fuels, evolving cyber risks, and growing regulatory complexity are fundamentally reshaping ship operations and competency requirements across all ranks.
At the same time, the industry continues to face wider global uncertainties, increasing operational demands, and an ongoing need to attract, develop, and retain highly skilled maritime professionals. This year’s journal reflects many of these developments and challenges.
In the Opinion piece, we examine the role of the firmly established Marlow Training Matrix and Continuous Proficiency Development (CPD) in supporting long-term competence, while also exploring the importance of maintaining balance between systems, structure, and the human element.
For the Analysis, industry expert Anastasia Kouvertari, Senior Lead, Human Competency at Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub, covers the importance of strengthening the trainer pipeline for alternative fuels education and supporting the industry’s wider transition towards decarbonisation.
