Invaluable Learning Experience about Shipping for Deck Cadets

Marlow deck prospective officers and their instructors from United Maritime Training Centre (UMTC) recently undertook a tour of full management vessel MV Warnow Boatswain during a recent call at the Port of Manila’s container terminal.

The tour started with a safety briefing and introduction on the Bridge where the Master introduced all his Officers to the group. A comprehensive escorted tour of the ship was provided, including the Navigational Bridge, Cargo Office, accommodation, the entire deck and then the engine, engine control and steering gear rooms.

The tour ended with refreshments and snacks and a very interesting Q&A session with the Master who was keen to hear what the prospective officers liked most of all on-board and why they have chosen seafaring as their profession.

“The ship, working cargo and unloading hundreds of containers at Port of Manila, as well as loading export containers with refrigerated perishable goods, was no doubt an excellent learning venue for these prospective officers, as they not only saw and experienced how the ship operates, but also understand the importance of shipping to the movement of world trade,” explained Operations Manager, Marlow Navigation, Captain Graham Cowling.

The visit also helped the cadets to consolidate and understand the theoretical aspects of their training in UMTC classrooms through the support and assistance of the Master, Officers and Crew of MV Warnow Boatswain.
