Marlow conducts compliance training seminars for all shore based staff ahead of the EU’s GDPR.

Marlow training seminar on the EU’s GDPR for all shore based staff

Prior to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) coming into force on the 25th of May, Marlow Navigation conducted training sessions for all shore based staff in crew and ship management offices.

This follows a number of actions which have already been taken at the company well in advance.

“GDPR starts and ends with every individual employee. It’s a mind-set which affects every action, task and decision during our work. Please treat the personal data of others in the same way that you would expect your own personal data to be treated.”

Training sessions consisted of three presentations. The first summarising the key requirements of the regulation, the second exploring the practical implications for the organisation and the third regarding cyber security awareness, which is an issue that has been widely publicised recently due the increased number of incidents and the threat it possesses to maritime industry generally.

The training sessions were well received by all staff members and succeeded in increasing everyone’s awareness on this important topic.

The GDPR is an EU regulation and is an evolution of existing data protection legislation. Generally, the purpose of the regulation is to ensure that the rights of the ‘Data Subject’ are upheld, whilst implementing appropriate measures to mitigate the risk of accidental/intentional data loss.

The path to GPDR compliance is a long one, however, Marlow Navigation is committed to take the necessary steps to ensure that all existing and future procedures are evaluated and adjusted to ensure the safeguarding of data within our care.
